FAQs
Where is HYT located?
HYT is a transient theatre group, meaning that we do not occupy one set location and we utilize other theaters and community spaces for our programming. Most commonly we perform in Grand Rapids, Ohio at the Town Hall, but we have also performed at Otsego High School in Tontogany, First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, and Eastwood High School in Pemberville. We also hold our workshops at the Bowling Green Community Center and our summer camps at Bowling Green City Park.
What does HYT do?
HYT is a youth theatre education program for ages 6-18. HYT does this through productions, classes, workshops, showcases, and other hands on learning opportunities.
How much does it cost to participate?
Horizon Youth Theatre does ask for participation fees for our large scale productions, but there are several free and low-cost opportunities to be had. These fees help us to pay for our instructors and other production costs. If you are interested in joining but have questions or concerns about the costs, please check out our scholarship opportunities or email Tim Barker at treasurer@horizonyouththeatre.org to arrange a payment plan.
Why should I get my kid involved in theatre?
Theatre is an excellent way to build skills and help kids to socialize with same-age peers and teen mentors. Through theater, you will see your child become more confident and develop their social-emotional skillset. Engaging in theatrical story telling helps to build empathy, increase reading comprehension, and connects your kid to a community of artistically minded and motivated individuals.
Theatre is an artform, but is also a unique opportunity to socialize and engage with people you may not have known otherwise. We’re all just a bunch of characters here!
Why should we choose HYT over other programs?
HYT provides high quality theatre education to kids ages 6-18 in Wood County, Ohio. Our group puts on 3-4 large scale productions a year, 2-3 small scale productions, and holds winter workshops and summer camps annually. We aim to offer a diverse theatre education and strive to provide unique opportunities that other companies may struggle to provide in many facets of theatre arts. This means more specialized instruction, more design and construction opportunities for techies, and more one-on-one time with directors. HYT also provides student leadership opportunities through our active and engaged student board, including directing, producing, and stage management.
Whether your kid is just beginning their career in theatre, is an advanced actor in need of a challenge, a technician with a passion for design, or a born leader looking to contribute their skills to a non-profit organization, HYT has opportunities to help them grow.
How do I get my kid involved?
Kids may feel overwhelmed with the idea of starting a new activity and the commitment that it takes to put on a full-scale production. We understand this and provide opportunities for kids to get their feet wet before jumping straight into the spotlight. We encourage everyone to audition for our productions, regardless of experience level, but if you’re looking for a smaller place to start, we recommend checking out our summer camps, winter workshops, and smaller scale student-led projects such as table reads. You may also want to start by seeing an HYT show and seeing what we can really do!
All of our opportunities and show dates/times can be found on our website or our social media. Follow us on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram for the latest HYT news!
How can I get involved as a parent?
We would be nothing without our parents and parent volunteers. Of course, we are just happy to have you and your child join us and our community, but if you are looking to contribute more to a theatre organization you can always join us for out monthly board meetings, bringing water and snacks to rehearsals, or signing up to help with tech dinners during tech week. Don’t know what a tech week is? Check out our “Theatre Vocab for Beginners” page!
