Directors Note
I love folk and fairy tales. I have a huge collection of them at home. It seems that every time I think about fairy tales, Cinderella is the first one that comes to mind. How about you? Or maybe Snow White, or Sleeping Beauty, or Rapuzel. These are all very well known. You could probably tell their stories to someone without having to think about them. But it struck me, one day years ago, that these familiar stories have something in common; the Handsome Prince. He comes into the story, and saves the girl, who falls in love with him, and they live happily ever after. So I started wondering. Why do these women have to rely on someone else to save them? Aren’t there any folk tails out there where the women solve their own problems? The answer, of course, is “Yes”. There are hundreds of them, from all around the world. I own three anthologies that consist entirely of stories with strong women who take care of themselves. These stories deserve as much attention as the familiar ones. It’s possible that the five stories you will be hearing today may not be familiar to you. The reason I wrote Tokens of her Cleverness was to fix that. You should know these tales. Our play is actually five short plays with a common theme. The stories themselves are distinct from each other. So how do I choose which story goes first? And next, and so on? By stealing an idea from Cassie Greenlee, of course. That’s where the tokens come in, and you people in the audience will get to decide which story we do next. I hope that you enjoy all of them.
