Thank you all for coming to our production of The Big Bad Musical.

When I was thinking of shows to pitch for this season, I knew this play would be perfect for our talented group of students. Both fun and challenging, this script offered up the chance for our students to explore character development, ensemble work, improvisation, and develop their stage presence. Plus, it is filled with hilarious bits and catchy songs that I knew our actors would enjoy performing for all their friends and families.

Being one of the first musical productions we’ve produced for our younger actors, I knew that this was likely some of our students' first time encountering certain elements like sheet music, monologues, and musical theatre choreography. Therefore, assembling a powerhouse of a production team was key for the success of this production and I am grateful for all of the hours of work our team put into this production. We went from learning the basics in the first rehearsal to solidifying challenging choreo, learning harmonies, and developing well-rounded characters through guided practice.

This script is filled with some classic characters that you, our audience, and our actors are likely familiar with. However, just like I had my actors do, we challenge you to not judge a book by its cover, and open your minds to this interpretation of these classic fairytale characters. Our actors were tasked with taking these classic figures and building them into fully developed, complex characters that have the potential to make you question what you really know about the big bad wolf and other supposed villains.

This script was one of the first I performed and fifteen years later I still identify it as a formative experience in my theatre career. I am hopeful that each member of our cast and crew will walk away with the same appreciation for this show that I had and continue developing the skills we are only just starting to build in them! Thank you and enjoy the show!
