Directors Note
Matilda’s story has long held a special place in my heart. My own Miss Honey, my 4th grade teacher Mrs. Ballard, first recommended the book to me, and I spent more time than I like to admit as a child in my bedroom, trying to make things move with my eyes. I identified so strongly with Matilda – not the horrible family life, but the tiny child who loved to read and so desperately wanted the world to be fair.
The Danny Devito movie was one of my favorites as a kid, and when the musical first came out, I watched the Olivier Award performance of “Naughty” on repeat for about a month and mainlined the soundtrack on my walks to work. I loved seeing new life given to this story that meant so much to me, ensuring that future generations of kids would fall in love with Matilda and Miss Honey like I had.
Now, Matilda is a child, surrounded by figures who are either wholly bad or wholly good, and this leads to a very black and white worldview – if a person does good things they should be rewarded, if they do bad things they should be punished, and if the world isn’t making that happen, it’s up to us to take on the task. As adults, of course, we recognise that the world isn’t that simple, but as adults, isn’t it also on us to acknowledge that maybe it should be?
Matilda is a story of empowerment for young and old alike, for everyone who feels like they are too small and insignificant to make a difference. And Matilda teaches us, hopefully, that if we can learn to be just a little bit brave, if we can find the courage to reach out to the people around us who might also feel too small and insignificant, and if we can come together instead of cutting ourselves off from the people around us, we can make a difference, one small act of justified defiance at a time.
