CALLING ALL STUDENT SCRIPT WRITERS!
Do you have a story to tell?
Have you ever wanted to write a script, but you aren’t sure where to start? Or maybe you have some ideas, but you don’t know how to make them performance-ready?
Then we want you to sign up for Horizon Youth Theatre’s 6th Annual Script Mentoring Program!
What is it?
HYT’s Script Mentoring Program pairs young student script writers with older mentors, to help them write the best possible short play that they can.
Why should I do it?
Because HYT needs student-written short plays for our Annual Festival of Shorts this spring!
When is it?
The mentoring program will start in November and run about six weeks, until the first submission deadline on December 15th.
What is the commitment?
Once assigned a mentor, you create your own schedule. Some teams meet once a week, some meet more often, some meet less. You should meet with your mentor as often as you need to feel comfortable with the script you’re writing.
What will my mentor do?
Your mentor is there to help guide your writing. They will ask you questions about your story, your characters, your dialogue, and your setting, all designed to help get your idea performance-ready. They will make suggestions of things to change or tweak so that your script will fit the bill when the selection for HYT’s One Acts comes around.
Can I find my own mentor?
If you have someone you know you want to work with, and you’ve talked to them and made arrangements, absolutely. If you have someone you know you want to work with, but you don’t know how to contact them, let us know when you sign up, and we will do our best to honor that.
Can I write as part of a team?
Absolutely! It’s probably best for the sake of productivity to keep writing teams to two, maybe three students, but if you’d like to write with a partner, you are more than welcome to!
If I sign up for mentoring, do I have to submit a play?
You do not. Likewise, you do not have to work with a mentor to submit a play. However, these two programs are designed to go hand in hand. We want you to write the best play you can, and with a little bit of a coaching from an experienced writer or theatre veteran will help a lot!
All right, you’ve convinced me! What do I do now?
If you would like to sign up to be paired with a Script Writing Mentor, please email Cassie Greenlee at email@example.com. Include the name of the student or students, their ages, if they’re part of a writing team, and if there’s a specific mentor they’d like to work with.
